It was recently reported that the media group Mandalay, owner of Casino Choice and Costa Bingo, has decided to sell of their highly valuable domain name Tournament.com after making the decision not to carry on further inside the online gaming tournament arena.
The owners of Mandalay Group, Alex Holt and Richard Skelhorn launched first person shooter tournaments on the companies owned domains Tournament.com and Tournament.co.uk back in 2007 under a pay to enter basis for the user. At the time they were under a license from Valve, provider of the the games Half-Life and Counter Strike, but later decided to shut down the tournament site after succumbing to financial burdens, which they could no longer alleviate.
The owners, Skelhorn and Hold commented on the situation saying: “We still believe there is a market for pay-to-enter video game tournaments, however due to the investment required in infrastructure and content licensing it is something that we have decided not to re-approach.
“We believe that unless a content owner like EA approach it themselves and therefore remove the licence fee element we will not see a third party operator again on the scale Tournament.com achieved. We are ready to sell the domain now along with the .co.uk and move on.”
They subsequently said that they thought the Tournament.com name would interest many groups and businesses including gaming clans, gaming companies and online gambling sites. According to Google, “Tournament” receives nearly 5 million queries per month, making it a highly venerable domain name to have for any business whose practice revolves around general competition or tournament play.
Mandalay Group announced that they will be considering viable offers for the domain on a first come first serve basis via their contact avenues for anyone who is interested in snatching it up.
